Diabetes MODY

Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a rare form of Diabetes that runs in families and is different from both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. It is caused by a change or mutation in a single gene. This is caused by a change in one of the eleven genes. Just like type 1 and type 2 diabetes, MODY diabetic people have trouble regulating their blood sugar levels.

If a parent has this gene mutation, there is a 50% chance of their children inheriting it. And when a child inherits MODY, they will generally develop it before they are 25 irrespective of their lifestyle, weight, etc.

Types

1. HNF1 – alpha: It causes Diabetes by lowering the amount of insulin made by the pancreas and causes about 70% of cases of MODY.

2. HNF4 – alpha: People with this gene have a birth weight of 4kg and may also have low blood sugar at or soon after birth which requires treatment. This type is not as common as other forms of MODY.

3. HNF1 – beta: People with this type of MODY can have numerous problems that include renal cysts, uterine abnormalities, gout, and diabetes.

4. Glucokinase: This gene helps recognize how high the blood glucose level is in the body. When this gene isn’t working properly the body allows the level of blood glucose to be higher than it should be.
